Centre seeks report from Kerala on clashes

The Centre has directed the Kerala government to ensure that adequate steps are taken to ensure safety of political workers in the state.

New Delhi: Amid increasing incidents of clashes between Left and BJP workers in Kerala, the home ministry has sought a detailed report from the state government on the killing of a 25-year-old BJP worker, Ramith, in Kannur district. It has also asked the government to furnish details of the incident and steps taken to arrest and punish those responsible for the brutal murder. The Centre has directed the Kerala government to ensure that adequate steps are taken to ensure safety of political workers in the state.

Officials said the home ministry was closely monitoring the situation in Kerala as there has been a rise in attacks on political activists "Since law and order is primarily a state subject, it is the responsibility of the government there to ensure safety of political workers. We will see how things unfold over the next few days before deciding on the future course of action,’’ a senior official said.
