Warangal: In the coming days, Warangal district will be a hub for all kinds of sports thus providing local athletes opportunities to hone their skills.

Warangal West MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar, speaking after the inauguration of the sports festival at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Hanamkonda on Wednesday, said the state government was keen on developing Warangal as the next big city in the state.

Accordingly, several state-level programmes have been conducted by the tourism and culture departments here, he said. Similarly, the state government has made Warangal one of the venues for the Telangana Premiere Kabaddi tournament held earlier this year.

“After noticing that several athletes from Warangal have proved their mettle in the national and international sports meets, we have decided to promote sports in the state from the rural-level. Most of the youth who hail from the rural areas do not have proper facilities and we want to fill that void,” the MLA said.

He said that the sports festival will help identify talented athletes hone their skills.
and make efforts to hone their skills for international level.

Rajya Sabha member Capt. V. Lakshmikantha Rao pointed out that even though India was the second most populated country in the world, it has failed to produce enough sportspersons.

Warangal police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu asked students to utilise the opportunity and grow as good sportspersons and bring laurels to the country.
District Youth and Sports Officer S. Dhanalakshmi said sports in 23 events would be held over four days from Wednesday to Sunday. Officials watch students fence during the inauguration of sports festival and Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Hanamkonda.
