Madras High Court moved on police brutality

Chennai: The head of the three-member family, brutally attacked by 3 police personnel in full public view at Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district on July 11, has approached the Madras high court to register a case against the 3 police personnel and suspend them.

When advocate Arockiadoss, counsel for the petitioner A. Raja, made a mention to take up the petition early, Justice P.N.Prakash said he will hear the matter on Thursday.

According to Raja, (resident of Thokkavadi village in Tiruvannamalai district) he went on July 11 to the market along with his son Surya. As his wife Usha came to the place belatedly, he scolded her. Immediately, SI Murugan, constables Nammalwar and Vijayakumar intervened and assaulted them even before they could explain the domestic situation. They brutally attacked them with their lathis.

The barbaric attack continued even after his wife fell at their feet and begged them not to beat her husband and son. In the melee, a portion of her jacket was torn and some local people offered her a piece of cloth to hide her breast. They were taken to the police station. Instead of giving treatment to their bleeding injuries and were beaten up in the station also. After the incident went viral on the social and TV media, a large number of local people gathered and gheraoed the police station.

At night, the SI gave '1,000 to the petitioner with the advice to go only to a private hospital for treatment, but the petitioner refused. In the meanwhile, the local DSP Shaji arrived at the scene and pacified the agitating crowd. She also requested the petitioner not to precipitate the issue.

The family was taken to a private nursing home where they were asked to approach the government hospital in Tiruvannamalai as the injuries were severe. A formal complaint was lodged on July 12. Apprehending that there would not be proper investigation, he has filed the present petition, he added and sought an interim directio to provide them treatment and protection.
