Kin celebrate toddler's birthday at Chennai police station

A cake was quickly ordered and the cops also picked up a new dress for Lokesh who was already adorned with one by his parents.

Chennai: Will any family celebrate their child’s first birthday at a police station? This family might have had a good reason though because their child had been kidnapped as a newborn but rescued by the cops within a few hours last year.

The couple, Venkatesan (35), and Latha (30) from Singaperumal Koil celebrated the first birthday of their son in this manner. They had one more reason to thank the cops for their swift action since Lokesh, who turned 1 on Monday, was born eight years after they got married.

The couple walked into the Chengelpet town police station on Monday where they met Inspector Lawmake and sought his blessings. A surprised inspector informed ASP Georgy George.

Thrilled to hear from the couple again about the child, the official invited the other subordinates including the then Inspector Saravanan, SI Shankar and the autorickshaw driver Sridhar, who was alert enough to identify the street in which he had dropped the woman who stole Lokesh. The entire police station turned into a jubilant mood.

A cake was quickly ordered and the cops also picked up a new dress for Lokesh who was already adorned with one by his parents. With Georgy George carrying the toddler, the cake was cut amid the applause of cops attached to the police station. The celebrations made the day for the cops.

Last year, Latha, admitted to Chengelpet GH, had asked a stranger, who had gained her confidence by helping her for a couple of days, to babysit Lokesh who was then five days old. When Latha returned from the washroom, both the baby and the woman had vanished.

Georgy George, after inquiring with the local autorickshaw stand, ordered to screen the autorickshaw drivers along the GST road for the child. Sridhar who was spotted near Thirumani informed that he had just dropped a woman along with a child and the child was then rescued.

The woman who stole the baby was married for 10 years and was not able to mother a child. She posed as being pregnant, and came to Chengelpet in the pretext of getting herself admitted for maternity. Moved by the woman’s story, the couple withdrew their complaint.
