KOCHI: With the Medical Council of India (MCI) dealing a severe blow, the Kerala students are set to be denied 850 MBBS seats in private medical colleges in the state this year while 100 seats will come up in a new private medical college at Tiruvalla. The Central Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued orders to this effect the other day.
A total of 100 seats is set to be added to the second government medical college coming up in the state capital. The MCI recommendation to this effect is expected to be approved by the Central Government.
The medical colleges that have been denied MBBS admission this year are DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (150), P K Das Institute of Medical Sciences Ottappalam (150), Mount Zion Medical College, Adoor (100), Al Azhar Medical College, Thodupuzha (150) and Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode (150).
The Gokulam Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram has been allotted only 50 seats down 100 seats from last year’s 150 seats while Kannur Medical College has been allotted 100 seats, down 50 seats from last year’s 150 seats. The new Believers Church Medical College has been allotted 100 MBBS seats.
The Ministry also rejected the application of the Rugmini Memorial Charitable Trust Thiruvananthapuram, SR Educational and Charitable Trust, Thiruvananthapuram and Royal Medical Trust, Palakkad to start new medical colleges. It also rejected the application of KMCT Medical College to increase its seats from 100 to 150. Meanwhile it is understood that the affected colleges plan to approach the High Court against the order.
