HYDERABAD: Durgam Cheruvu Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), one of the 31 STPS being constructed in the city, is nearing completion and is likely to be operational by the end of this month, said an official from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board. The trial run of the STP has already begun and work is progressing at a brisk space.
"The trial run has been fine. We are looking for the slightest of shortcomings, if any. The trial run will continue for seven to 10 days. It should be ready for launch by the month-end," said T.V. Sridhar, chief general manager, STP division - 2. He added that currently, a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system is being installed for the STP.
According to a water board official, the Durgam Cheruvu STP, being constructed at an approximate cost of Rs 15 crore, has a capacity of seven million litres/day (MLD).
"The staff has been working in three shifts to ensure an early inauguration," he said.
Sridhar said that seven STPs are likely to be ready May.
Meanwhile, currently, 1,950 million gallons of sewage are generated daily within Hyderabad urban agglomeration, of which 1,650 million gallons are produced in GHMC limits. Of that, 772 million gallons are treated through the existing 25 sewage treatment plants. The new STPs will treat the remaining 878 million gallons in the first phase. The new system will be able to control increases in sewerage until 2036.
