Chennai cops beat up couple, son at Chengam

Cops intervene in altercation between couple over a personal issue.

TIRUVANNAMALAI: A family of three – father, mother and son – who went shopping, were brutally beaten up by three lathi-wielding policemen in Chengam
in Tiruvannamalai district.

The shocking incident occurred on Monday morning in a town near Chengam when the husband and wife began arguing over a personal issue in which the policemen on duty at the bazaar intervened on their own and demanded the reason for their altercation. “It is our personal issue,” was all Raja, an auto driver, told the policemen.

Within seconds, the policemen started thrashing the couple and their son despite repeated plea from the trio to spare them since they did no wrong. Ghastly visuals of policemen unleashing brutality were beamed on almost all television channels on Monday evening.

Repeated requests and cries of the hapless couple and their son went unheeded as the men in khaki were in no mood to stop their relentless attack on them. The policemen were so furious that they continued attacking the couple even after one of the lathis broke.

Eyewitnesses said the couple was arguing without disturbing anyone, but the police near-by intervened and unleashed violence on them. As television channels flashed the incident, Tiruvannamalai SP R. Ponni transferred the three policemen — Namalvaar, Murugan and Vijayakumar—to Armed Reserve (AR), Vellore, and ordered a departmental inquiry.

“The three policemen have been transferred and asked to report at Vellore. The Chengam DSP has been asked to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and further action against the three will be decided after the inquiry report is submitted,” Ponni told Deccan Chronicle. She said a departmental enquiry was on.
