Rains likely in AP due to low bay pressure

Visakhapatnam: A low-pressure area is likely to form over southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal around November 15.

According to Dr. Karunasagar of IMD Amaravathi, lower tropospheric north-easterly and easterly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. The system might more towards west central Bay of Bengal and bring rains to coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

“This will bring great relief to the state, which is reeling under drought conditions due to deficit rainfall in October,” Dr. Karunasagar observed.

According to him, October ended with 90 per cent deficit rainfall. The state received 16.3 mm of rainfall against the normal 161.5 mm. Though the winter monsoon has set in over Andhra Pradesh on October 21, it has not yielded much rain.

All the 26 districts are deficit in rainfall, ranging between 90 per cent and 99 per cent. There had been zero rains in October in Kurnool, YSR Kadapa, East Godavari, NTR, Nellore, Srikakulam, Nandyal and Sri Satyasai district.

Andhra Pradesh has recorded 454.6 mm rainfall between June 1 and September 30 this year, which was 13 per cent deficit. The normal rainfall is 521 mm.

The IMD said winter will be warmer in many parts of the coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, while it will be colder in the agency tracts of ASR and Manyam districts.
