India world leader in nuke technology: AEC chief

Nuclear technology is one of the vital sectors that could offer solutions on a platter.

Chennai: India’s nuclear programme is on expansion mode; and the country is a world leader in nuclear technology, Sekhar Basu, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission & Union secretary, department of atomic energy, has said.

Nuclear technology is one of the vital sectors that could offer solutions on a platter. “It can also usher in second green revolution. Even in healthcare, too, nuclear technology will play a major role,” Mr Basu said delivering the seventh convocation address at the Hindustan University in suburban Padur.

Turning to students, he said the biggest challenge at present was to bring India onto the growth path without affecting the natural resources. “You are emerging out of the portals of learning at a time when Indian economy is getting integrated with global economy…you should make India a self-reliant nation without borrowing technology,” he said.

Besides Dr. Sekhar Basu, R.K. Tyagi, president —– elect, The Aeronautical Society of India and Dr Amitabh Mattoo, former Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, were presented the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Hindustan University on the occasion.

Chancellor of the university, Mrs Eizabeth Verghese stressed the importance of research in engineering education so as to create quality engineers to contribute for the sustainable and economic growth of the nation. The Hindustan Group of Institutions has completed 50 years in the field of educational excellence and contributed the best engineers to the society.

A total of 1,018 persons, including 347 post graduates, 646 graduates, 22 Ph.D scholars, 3 M. Phil scholars were conferred degrees and awards.

Dr S. Ramachandran Vice Chancellor, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese Pro Chancellor, Mr Ashok Verghese and Dr Aby Sam, Directors, Dr Pon. Ramalingam, Registrar, were among those who participated.
