Kerala Budget 2016: Kannur gets a handful; health, infra to flourish

Kannur University will get an aid of Rs 23.7 crore and further financial assistance after detailed discussion.

Kannur: Finance Minister Dr Thomas Isaac has earmarked Rs 50 crore for establishing a women and children hospital at Thalassery. The Government Brennen College in the town, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, will be converted into a digital college along with four other colleges.

A sum of Rs 30 crore has been allocated for the construction of flyovers at Mele Chovva and South Bazar in Kannur town to ease traffic congestion. Kannur University will get an aid of Rs 23.7 crore and further financial assistance after detailed discussion. Malabar Cancer Centre at Kodiyeri will get Rs 29 crore for basic facility development.

Mattannur municipality has been included in the special package for comprehensive development of civic bodies along with another eight municipalities. A cultural centre in the name of Vagbhatananda will be established in Kannur. Theyyam artistes will get pension.

Funds have been allotted for a statue for music director Raghavan Master in Thalaserry (Rs 10 lakh) , Poorakkali academy in Payyannur (Rs 25 lakh), Kayyur memorial (Rs 50 lakh) and Kshethrakala academy in Madayi Kavu (Rs 50 lakh). A multipurpose indoor stadium will be constructed in the name of Jimmy George. Thalassery port and Kannur airport road will be developed.
