Bail given for Vellarada village office attack accused

State Government vehemently opposed the bail application and asked the court not to grant bail.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday granted bail to Samkutty the accused in Vellarada Village Office attack case. Justice P Ubaid imposed stringent bail conditions and directed Samkutty to deposit Rs 40,000 in one week along with two solvent securities. State Government vehemently opposed the bail application and asked the court not to grant bail.

State contended that it has suffered a loss of Rs 2.86 lakh apart from loss of documents. The government asked court to impose a penalty of Rs 2.86 lakh if the court feels to grant bail. Samkutty's counsel opposed the move and submitted that he is not in a position to pay the penalty. The court later asked Samkutty to deposit Rs 40,000. The court asked Samkutty to cooperate with the investigation.

Samkutty, was arrested in connection with the attack on Vellarada village office. A rubber-tapping worker from Vellarada was arrested for the attack. Samkutty frequented the village office for a long time to get the mutation of his ancestral property undertaken. He is believed to have been frustrated over the long delay which instigated him to commit the crime.
