Hyderabad witnesses sudden spell of rains
Hyderabad: Drizzles that began at about 5 pm on Monday intensified at around 9 pm, wreaking havoc on the city's transportation system and adding to the chaos caused by VIP movements
The IMD said there is more rain in store, caused by a cyclonic circulation over the east central Arabian Sea that could intensify into a low pressure.
The timing of the downpour couldn't have been worse, coinciding with the conclusion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting at LB Stadium. As the meeting ended, a tidal wave of traffic cascaded through several parts of the city, causing severe congestion.
From Koti and Basheerbagh to the roads leading to Liberty, Tank Bund, Secunderabad, Lakdikapul, Masab Tank, and Mehdipatnam, Sardar Patel road the city's thoroughfares became gridlocked. Massive storms pounded several areas, including Serlingampally, Hitec City, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Tellapur, and Narsingi, persisting for around 30 minutes before tapering down to drizzles.
The impact of the rains was felt across the city, with the IT corridor experiencing significant traffic jams as employees heading home found themselves stranded. Metro Rail trains and buses were crowded, and cab and autorickshaw fares skyrocketed as commuters sought refuge from the relentless downpour.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the city received an average rainfall of 7.1mm on Tuesday. These powerful rains weren't limited to Hyderabad alone, as they spread to Suryapet, Khammam, and Nalgonda districts. Storms also raged in Yadadri-Bhongir and the Ghatkesar region.
