Six dalits to be priests as Travancore Devaswom Board clears posting

Of the backward communities, 36 have found place in the appointment list and of this 16 are from the merit list.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the history of Travancore Devaswom Board, the devaswom recruitment board has recommended to appoint 36 non Brahmins including six Dalits as priests. The recruitment board prepared the list for appointment to the post of part time shanthi (priests) after conducing PSC model written test and interview. An official statement here said Devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran had given instructions to comply with merit list and reservation norms while carrying out the appointments to check corruption.

The recommendation is for appointing a total of 62 priests of which 26 from the forward communities had already attainted eligibility for appointment on the basis of the merit list. Of the backward communities, 36 have found place in the appointment list and of this 16 are from the merit list. This is the first time in the history of devaswom board that six persons belonging to Scheduled Caste communities are being appointed as priests.
