Labourer dies in accident at NTTPS

Vijayawada: Mallavarapu Showry, 35, a contract labourer, died after he met with an accident at the Stage-1 Coal Plant of Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) during the early hours of Saturday.

He got crushed between two goods train bogies while linking them to the train. Authorities of the plant rushed Showry to the NTTPS hospital, where the doctors confirmed his death.

Upon hearing the news, Showry's family members as well as union leaders and workers from NTTPS rushed to the hospital and staged a protest. They alleged that the contract labourer had died due to the management's negligence.

They blamed the accident on a lack of walkie-talkies, which resulted in poor communication between the goods train driver and workers.

Several political party leaders also joined the agitation, demanding justice for the deceased family. Tension prevailed at the NTTPS Hospital.

NTTPS chief engineer P. Naveen Gowtham held discussions with political party leaders and union leaders. He assured them that the group insurance of Rs 17 lakh would be provided to the family of the deceased, along with an additional Rs 10 lakh by the management.

In addition, Gowtham offered a casual labour post to Showry's wife. Following this, the agitation was called off.

Showry's body was later shifted to the Government General Hospital in Vijayawada for post-mortem.
