Action on Sterlite Shooting Clarified

Chennai: All the 17 police officers indicted by the Justice (Retired) Aruna Jagadeesan commission that went into the police firing at protestors, who were demanding the closing down of the Sterlite copper smelting plant, in Thoothukudi on May 22, 1918, during the previous AIADMK regime, faced departmental action, the State government clarified on Tuesday.

Reacting to some media reports that put out wrong information on the action taken against those found fault by the commission, whose recommendations were discussed in the State Assembly on May 8, 2022, the official press release gave details of the compensation paid to the families of the 13 persons who were killed in the police firing.

It also said that permission had been granted for initiating felony charges against five police officials – one sub-inspector, two head constables and one first grade constable – after three constables had been suspended from service, it said.

An inspector, sub-inspector and head constable have also been taken to task by the department as per the recommendations of the commission.

The clarification also gave details of the compensation paid to various people.
