Drunk driving: 1,177 charged, 17 jailed in April

Convicts can face problems in getting government jobs.

HYDERABAD: In April 1,177 charge sheets were filed against drunken drivers and they were produced in the Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Erramanzil, Hyderabad. Sixteen drunk drivers were imprisoned for 10 days and one person was jailed for a period of 15 days in April. The Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Court has awarded jail terms to 444 people apart from imposing a fine of Rs 17,39,000 on those found drunk while driving. According to Hyderabad traffic police, people who are caught and convicted in drunk driving cases may face difficulties in getting government jobs, passports and visa clearance.

Among the 444 people who were produced in court one person was imprisoned for 15 days while 16 persons were imprisoned for 10 days. Four persons were jailed for seven days, eight persons for five days, 19 persons for four days, 48 people for three days, 101 people for two days and 32 for a day. 215 persons were asked to do social service along with the fine. During April and 1,177 cases were booked against drunk drivers.
