Hyderabad: 53.6 per cent rise in crimes on children

The total number of people who were convicted for crimes against children was 9,083 in 2014.

Hyderabad: There is a 53.6 per cent increase in crimes against children including sexual abuse. As many as 89,423 cases were registered in 2014, up from 58,224 cases in 2013, according to statistics provided in the Lok Sabha.

The Centre provided the data in reply to a question posed by Prof. Chintamani Malviya and Mr B. Vinod Kumar.

In 2014,, 2,059 cases were registered in Andhra Pradesh and 59 persons were convicted. While in 2013, 2,576 cases were registered against 167 convictions. In TS, data was available only for 2014 which showed 1,930 cases were registered and 108 convicted.

The highest number of cases registered were for outraging the modesty (11,335 cases nationwide), sexual exploitation of both boys and girls (8,904) and abduction and kidnapping (37,854 cases in the country).

The total number of people who were convicted for crimes against children was 9,083 in 2014. The government stated that it had started a helpline, 1098, for children who are in distress and being exploited, the Centre said.
