Govt must convene Assembly on Mekedatu dam issue: Stalin

DMK, friendly parties to stage protest in Tiruchy.

Chennai: The Opposition DMK, which has resolved to stage a protest in Tiruchy on Dec. 4 along with its friendly parties, condemning the Centre for its nod to Karnataka to prepare a DPR for constructing a balancing reservoir-cum-drinking water project across Cauvery river at Mekedatu, has demanded the state government to convene a special sitting of the State Assembly to pass a resolution against the dam and send it to the Centre.

“The TN Assembly should be convened immediately and a special resolution passed against the dam. The copy of the resolution should be sent to the Centre,” Stalin insisted. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the DMK's friendly parties at the party headquarters - Anna Arivalayam here on Thursday, Stalin informed the parties had resolved to stage a massive agitation in Tiruchy on Dec. 4 condemning the Centre for granting permission to neighbouring Karnataka for preparing the DPR.

“The meeting which was convened within 24 hours, resolved to stage an agitation initially,” he said and added at the meeting all the leaders paid their homage to those who lost their lives due to cyclone Gaja, by observing silence for two minutes.

“You may wonder why other parties were not invited,” he said and added that they could not be invited for today’s meeting due to paucity of time.

“Actually, the agitation should be held in the Delta districts but due to prevailing situation arising out of cyclone Gaja, we decided upon Tiruchy as venue for agitation. Also because Tiruchy comes under the Delta region,” he said and appealed to all the parties to participate forgetting their political differences and by rising above the party. People especially farmers would also take part.

Asked if he would invite the BJP too, he replied, "I have done just that now. Through you (media) I appeal to all the parties to support the agitation sinking their political differences and rising above the party," Stalin who was flanked by TNCC chief Su. Thirunavukarasar and MDMK chief Vaiko and other leaders, told reporters.

Leaders of friendly parties, including Vaiko and VCK leader Thol Tirumavalavan who recently sought to know if they were part of the DMK alliance, took part in the meeting which was also attended by the Communist leaders.
