TRS, MIM in Wakf deal

The tacit TRS-MIM agreement now paves the way for TRS Council member Mohammed Saleem.

Hyderabad: The tacit understanding between the ruling party and MIM for the January 10 election to the Telangana State Wakf Board has resulted in the lone Muslim MLA of the TRS, Mr Shakeel, losing a chance to head the board.

The tacit TRS-MIM agreement now paves the way for TRS Council member Mohammed Saleem. a former chairman of the erstwhile AP State Wakf Board.

Sources in the Wakf Board said the MIM was strongly opposed to the candidature of Mr Shakeel and had asked Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to nominate any of the Muslim MLCs in the TRS so that it could extend support.

Sources revealed that the two parties had almost come to an understanding that all five members — a Muslim MP from the state, two Muslim members from the Legislature, a Muslim member of the Bar Council and two members from mutawallis and managing committees of Wakf institutions — would be elected unanimously.

It is almost certain that MIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi would be elected from among the MPs, and Mr Zakir Hussain Jawed, advocate and lone member Muslim member in the Bar Council, would be elected.

From the Legislature, Mr Saleem and MIM MLA Mohammed Moazzam Khan would be elected unopposed. Sources said consultations were on between the TRS and MIM with regard two posts under the mutawalli category,

The MIM is said to be eyeing both posts, but the ruling party is asking for one post for its nominee, Mr Anwar Baig, president of the Masjid-e-Saeefa at Chaderghat.
