Official apathy killing lakes in Hyderabad

Due to their negligence several lakes have been fully covered with hyacinth and have become major breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Hyderabad: The apathy of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority officials are pushing several lakes to the point of extinction. Due to their negligence several lakes have been fully covered with hyacinth and have become major breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Mr Raghuvamsi S., a civic activist, through his twitter handle, posted, “We are not in a position to live here due to the foul smell and mosquitoes around Amber lake near Pragathinagar, Water remains stagnant increasing the stench and mosquitoes. Kids are suffering with dengue and viral fevers. We have submitted so many representations to authorities seeking their help to clean the lake. Kindly do the needful urgently please.”

Mr Subash Reddy, a resident of Nagaram said that the condition of Annarayani Cheruvu has been getting worse with every passing day. He said that the HMDA has already allocated funds to clean up the lake but the lakes’ administration wing has been turning a blind eye despite giving several representations.

When the issue was brought to the notice of higher authorities, officials said that since the Model Code of Conduct is in place they cannot take up lake cleaning and citizens have to bear with it until the conclusion of elections.
