Activists' arrests: Unexpected, says Varavara Rao's wife

“However, there is four weeks for us to file a plea in the high court to quash the case,” Ms Hemalatha said.

Hyderabad: Writer Varavara Rao’s wife Hemalatha on Friday said they did not expect the judgment from the apex court which ordered that the probe on five activists could continue. “However, there is four weeks for us to file a plea in the high court to quash the case,” Ms Hemalatha said. The top court has extended the period of house arrest by 30 days. Ms Hemalatha said, “We were expecting a different judgment. We were hopeful that the apex court would squash the case registered by the Pune police. But the outcome came differently..”

Mr Venugopal Rao, a nephew of Mr Varavara Rao, told mediapersons: “This case is cooked up and concocted. The judgement given by the court clearly mentioned the blunders made by the Pune police, in searching the house without a warrant, giving a punchanama report in a different language and bringing witnesses from Pune to the city to conduct searches.” He said this showed that the Pune police had failed in following legal procedures. Central zone DCP P. Viswa Prasad said that security is being continued at Mr Varavara Rao’s house in Gandhinagar.
