Thiruvananthapuram: Kudumbashree workers to be trained as dog-catchers

The block management units will be responsible for catching dogs and taking them to a veterinary hospital for ABCs.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kudumbashree women will be trained as dog catchers from October 5, so that they help implement the ABC programme. Kudumbashree, in a press release, said that they decided to intervene as it had become a major social issue.

Moreover, this will be a source of income for women who are part of Kudumbashree ‘Ayalkkoottams’, the release says.

The participants of the project will be chosen and given training. After they are trained, microentrepreneurial units of five members will be formed. Kudumbashree aims at setting up 50 such units across the state. Later in every block panchayat, the units will become management units.

The block management units will be responsible for catching dogs and taking them to a veterinary hospital for ABCs. The women will have to ensure the dogs undergo ABC surgery as well as their post-surgical care.

A pilot project has been launched in Parakkadavu, Angamali and Pambakkuda block panchayats in Ernakulam. The project will start on October 5.

The first priority in selection to the units will be women. However, men who are part of Kudumbashree families can also participate.
