Hyderabad High Court stays GHMC's demolitions

The Judge made it clear the court would not dispute officials' intention.

HYDERABAD: Pulling up the GHMC for demolition of structures without serving notices, the High Court on Wednesday granted a stay on demolitions of four constructions in Banjara Hills for eight weeks. Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao was dealing with petitions by Mateen Ahmad and three others challenging the action of the GHMC in demolishing their properties.

The Judge expressed surprise at the attitude of officials, saying they don’t have knowledge of illegal structures till the announcement of the CM that 28,000 illegal structures existed in city.

The Judge made it clear the court would not dispute officials’ intention. The action of removing structures on nalas is not questioned, but the method adopted — of issuing notices so as to give an opportunity to the occupiers — may not be strictly correct, the court stated.
