Bengaluru: A 53-year-old woman provided a new lease of life to seven patients as the family agreed to donate her organs, after she was declared brain dead following a road accident.
Nirmala Bhat, wife of Vasudev Bhat from Karkala, met with a road accident on June 22 and was referred to Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospital in Manipal.
She was admitted to ICU on June 25 and as per protocol stipulated by Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994, two of her heart valves, corneas, kidneys and the liver were harvested for transplantation.
The liver was transported from Manipal where the patient was admitted and transplanted in a Bengaluru patient. On June 26, a team of doctors from BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals travelled to KMC to retrieve the liver via an air ambulance. A green corridor was arranged for the transfer of the liver from KMC Manipal to Mangaluru airport, from 3.35 pm to 4.40 pm. On arrival at the BIAL airport at 5.45 pm, another green corridor was arranged starting from the airport at 6 pm to BGS Hospital.
Dr Suresh Raghavaiah, Consultant HPB and Multi-organ Transplantation, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital told Deccan Chronicle, “With the collaborative support from the doctors, medical professionals and police, we were able to ensure the speedy transfer of the liver for our patient, who was suffering from end-stage liver disease.”
The corneas and one kidney are being provided to patients admitted in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. The other kidney is being transplanted to patients in Mangaluru. Likewise, two heart valves would be used on a patient from Bengaluru.
