Many areas water-logged after rains lash Hyderabad city

Hyderabad: The city woke up on Saturday to heavy rains, which left many areas covered with knee-deep water.

In areas like Toli Chowki, Shaikept, Golconda, Langer Houz, Attapur, Masab Tank, Asifnagar, Zehranagar, MG Nagar and Filmnagar, roads and main thoroughfares were inundated. The situation was equally harrowing in Nizam Colony, Friends Colony, Hakeempet, Meeraj Colony, Kohsar Colony, Hydershakote and Suncity.

The GHMC said its Disaster Relief Force had received 25 complaints of trees falling and 15 of water stagnation 15. It recovered 19 two-wheelers from the nalas.

Syed Iqbal, a resident of Hakeempet, said they could not step out on the roads for several hours. The downpour covered the potholes, making it dangerous to travel.

Anil Kumar, an IT professional from Shaikpet, said, “I was saved from the horror of bad roads and traffic as it was my weekly off. But we will have to bear similar trauma in the days ahead.”

Commuters faced extreme hardship at the Tolichowki flyover as the water flowing from the nearby area had accumulated there.

“Despite spending so much on box drains near Nizam Colony, the water-logging issue remains. I dread to think of the situation monsoon”, said Md Ahmed, a local grocery shopkeeper.

Although rains receded by early afternoon, residents expressed worry over the condition of roads and drains as the monsoon season is round the corner.

Subhan Khan from Asifnagar said that unless a proper drainage system was put in place, the city would continue to reel under the rain havoc.
