Supreme Court stays contempt order against lawyer for Facebook post

The said the sentence awarded to him was arbitrary and lacking in reason.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the order of the Punjab and Haryana high court imposing one-month imprisonment on advocate Maneesh Vashistha for contempt of court for his Facebook post about an adverse order passed against him.

A bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Ashok Bhushan granted stay on an appeal filed by the advocate, who contended that the high court took contempt action suo motu without any material evidence. It was alleged that aggrieved by an adverse order the petitioner posted comments on Facebook, which were contemptuous in nature. The said the sentence awarded to him was arbitrary and lacking in reason.
