Tamil Nadu government appoints R Muthukumaraswamy as new advocate general

He has been designated as senior advocate by the Madras high court in 2001.

Chennai: Senior advocate R. Muthukumaraswamy has been appointed as advocate general for the state of Tamil Nadu. An order was passed by the state government on Friday, following the resignation of senior advocate A.L.Somayaji from the post of advocate general of the state.

Born on December 24, 1946, Muthukumaraswamy completed his B.Sc (Physics) degree from Presidency College, Madras, and obtained his law degree from Madras Law College. He enrolled as an advocate on August 1, 1973.

He joined the office of eminent senior advocate and former advocate general of Tamil Nadu R. Krishnamoorthy, soon after his enrolment and continued to be associated with him till 2001.

He was appointed as special government pleader by the state government in 1994 and later government pleader in 1995 and held the post till May 1996. He was also the Central government senior standing counsel during the years 1998-99.

He appeared along with advocate general in many important cases which included the validity of the orders of the Speaker disqualifying the members of the Legislative Assembly and validity of Tamil Nadu Private College Regulation Act and Rules.

He has been designated as senior advocate by the Madras high court in 2001. Later, he held the post of additional advocate general from 2001 till 2006. During this period, he was appointed to be part of the legal team appearing for the state of Tamil Nadu in Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and Supreme Court of India in the long standing water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states. He appeared for the Tamil Nadu government before the Tribunal, where the arguments commenced in 2002 and got concluded in April 2006. He played a vital role in the said proceedings, which lead to the passing of the award for Tamil Nadu in 2007. He was elected as president of the Madras Bar Association in April 2012 and held the post for two years.
