Kin forced to carry bier through pond in Madhya Pradesh

Official reports said a 70-year-old woman died in the village on Thursday.

Bhopal: A village in Madhya Pradesh witnessed the ugly face of feudal culture when the local landlord allegedly prohibited a funeral procession to pass through his agriculture land forcing kin of a deceased woman to carry her bier through a 4ft-deep pond to the cremation ground.

A video showing the villagers carrying the bier wading in water in the pond on Friday went viral bringing to limelight the shocking incident that took place in the village of Bihar under Panagar block in Jabalpur district.

Official reports said a 70-year-old woman died in the village on Thursday. Mourners carrying the body were denied passage to cremation ground through land route, owned by a local villager, forcing them to enter a water body to reach the burial place. Later, they found standing crops in the village cremation ground so they were forced to cremate in private land.
