Chennai: Seized jewels worth Rs 14.5 crore returned

The occupants of the car claimed that they were carrying the jewels to Delhi.

Chennai: The Chennai city police and the flying squad on Monday night seized nearly Rs 14.5 crore worth diamond jewellery from a man at Nelson Manickam Road in Choolaimedu.

Disclosing the seizure, officials said they have been conducting vehicle checks across the district to track the movement of cash, gift items meant for distribution to voters. An officer said the squad while conducting a vehicle check at the Nelson Manickam road intercepted a van and found diamond jewellery valued at more than Rs 14.5 crore which was transported without supporting documents.

The occupants of the car claimed that they were carrying the jewels to Delhi. They said the diamond jewellery was brought to the city a week ago for an exhibition held at Egmore. However, they were not able to produce valid supporting documents which led to the seizure.

Police sources said the van was handed over to the owner on Tuesday morning after they submitted documents of the jewels.
