Hyderabad: No traffic; Tank Bund will be recreation zone soon

The project is inspired by the Sabarmati river front project, and is part of the effort to beautify Tank Bund.

Hyderabad: If the plans of Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan are going to succeed, the historic Tank Bund will be closed to traffic, and will turn it into a recreation zone. The government proposes to hold official events including Independence Day, Republic Day, State Formation Day and cultural events besides making it a happening place throughout the year.

GHMC has chalked out several plans and zeroed in on one which proposes to construct a six-km flyover from the Ambedkar statue to Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to take the traffic that usually passes on Tank Bund.

The project is inspired by the Sabarmati river front project, and is part of the effort to beautify Tank Bund.

According to the plan, a GHMC official said, a portion of the Telugu Talli flyover would need to be dismantled as there is another plan by the civic body to construct a flyover from the Katta Maisamma temple on Lower Tank Bund road to VST Crossroads via Indira Park, Ashoknagar and RTC Crossroads.

Tank Bund project feasibility study on
The project has been handed over to STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd to conduct a feasibility study and submit a detailed project report (DPR).

Mr Rammohan told this newspaper that the government feels that the Golconda Fort was not the ideal choice for state events, as it cannot accommodate all the VVIPs and people who turn up to see them.

He said it was difficult to the police to make security arrangements during such events.

He said the government has decided that Tank Bund would be the right venue to host these events, as it can accommodate more than 10,000 people.

He said that once the plan fructifies, Tank Bund will be open only to pedestrians and used as a recreation zone for citizens.

Asked whether the project would hinder the Ganesh nimajjanam, Mr Rammohan said the immersion procession was considered a state festival, and would not be affected by the new plan.

The mayor said that vehicular traffic coming from NTR Marg, Lakdikapul and Himayatnagar will be diverted through the flyover with entry and exit points at different locations, as is the case with the PVNR expressway.

He said the four-lane flyover would run start at Liberty junction, pass through Ambedkar statue, Lower Tank Bund, Bible House, General Bazaar and reach JBS.

He said the GHMC had hired STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd to conduct a feasibility study. After examining the pros and cons in the DPR, the GHMC will complete the project in 15 months.
