Hyderabad: Lyricists in demand as poll race hots up

For TRS, the CM Mr Rao himself is said to have penned lyrics which would be composed to tunes.

Hyderabad: With elections around the corner, political parties are finalising campaign songs that would be blared through loudspeakers across the State to attract and motivate voters to elect their party candidates. The political parties are producing new songs or revamping old tunes in a bid to connect with crowds and drum up support while beating down their opponents. While songs alone cannot sway the voters, this year the parties are gearing up to unleash multimedia blitzkrieg on the electorate “to dumb them to think,” said a political thinker.

For TRS, the CM Mr Rao himself is said to have penned lyrics which would be composed to tunes. The TRS language is “stereotyped, insipid as all the leaders of the family speak in the same tone and tenor,” said Mr P. Obula Reddy, a retired professor of linguistics. The arrangement of words in the sentence, whether it was a lyric or a dialogue, should electrify the audience to get maximum response, he said.

The YSRC which relies mostly on emotional connect to the father-son legacy, heavily draw on smileys to woo the audience. There is predictability in these tunes and that is why they are a huge drag for audience, said Narayanababu. Siddipet is said to be nerve centre for private albums. Several artists are working on dishing out new songs depending on the political philosophies of the parties, he said.

The TD, which rode to power in just nine months after it was floated in 1982 is banking on the recorded songs by playback singer SP Balasubramanyam. Congress songs remind the Doordarshan stuff of the yore. Unleashing emotion to drive the voters to polling booths is the idea behind campaign music, said Narayana Babu, who worked for a couple of parties in previous elections.
