Kerala: CUSAT to aid shipyard

Varsity's PhD will boost CSL's research and development wing.

Kochi: The higher education programmes of the departments of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) like the Ship Technology will be utilised to aid the research and development activities recently initiated by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Upon encountering any technical flaw during ship building and related activities, the specific issues will be given as a topic for the Ph D Programmes and also as thesis works for Post Graduate programmes. The best works will be compiled and handed back to the CSL for taking rectification action.

The initiative is being planned following the signing of an agreement between CUSAT and CSL for academic and industrial co-operations recently.

“The CSL has started in-house research and development activities and the role of CUSAT will be to supplement the same. What we’re planning to do is to identify the specific technical problems or research areas. If the same is one requiring long term resolution, then they will be given as subjects for Ph D researches. For short-term solutions, the topics will be given as thesis work in Post Graduate courses,” said Dr K. Shivaprasad, head, department of Ship Technology, CUSAT. The first topic being planned is a suitable model for inland navigation.
