South Chennai and Kancheepuram district, which made headlines for the deluge last year, have started showing signs of water scarcity.

Chennai: South Chennai and Kancheepuram district, which made headlines for the deluge last year, have started showing signs of water scarcity after a period of 11 months. The situation is such that the municipal authorities and residents are now going in for new borewells as existing ones have lost their purpose, thanks to the dwindling ground water levels. Water managers associated with suburban municipalities are now attending the old agricultural wells and constructing overhead tanks to meet summer demand.

Forecasting a severe shortage in summer, Pallavaram municipality has already constructed five bore wells in Nemilicherry, Kilkattalai and Haridasapuram besides roping in seven private wells in the neighbourhood. Anakaputhur municipality, which is already suffering water crisis, has constructed 150 borewells in all the 18 wards, besides de-silting 20 wells. Tambaram Municipality, which is suffering the daily crunch of 60 lakh litres would shoulder on commencing the borewel work around the nine water bodies.

Four borewells are already constructed in Shankar Nagar of Pammal Municipality. The civic body is optimistic of completing Pallavaram - Pammal Kootu Kudineer Tittam within a year. Municipal engineer of Pallavaram Municipality, Karpayya Raja told DC that the civic body is taking up pro-active works to handle the dry situation. “Metro water work commenced in the municipality with the budget of '99.95 crore will be completed by April 2017. Also, 65 per cent works to construct overhead tanks is completed," he explained.
