Bengaluru: Citizens oppose garbage mafia clout

BBMP is trying to regularise contract pourakarmikas and these contractors want only their men to be selected, N.S. Ramakanth said.

Bengaluru: People from various citizens group, Solid Waste Management Practitioners, Suchi Mitras and NGOs staged a protest in front of Town Hall on Sunday against the excesses of BBMP contract mafia in solid waste management in the city.

The protesters alleged the mafia was trying to prevent the government from implementing various measures such as biometric attendance and regularisation of contract pourakarmikas.

N.S. Ramakanth, member, Solid Waste Management Expert Committee, BBMP said, "BBMP garbage contractors have taken the city for granted and are calling the shots. BBMP is trying to regularise contract pourakarmikas and these contractors want only their men to be selected. This apart, they are opposing biometric attendance, which will weed out many ‘ghost’ pourakarmikas."

When citizens try to become a part of the administration with the help of Ward Committees, corporators have filled up the names of their own followers who will not question their decision, he lamented.

Srinivas Alavalli, coordinator of Citizens for Bengaluru said "We spend Rs 750 crore every year and the city still has thousands of black spots and the pourakarmikas don't even getting salaries. What a terrible waste of public money?"

"I demand the government to bring in a law that says all the garbage produced in a ward should be processed within ward boundaries. This will force an entirely new system of garbage management that can be monitored by ward committees. Decentralisation is the only way out of this mess," he added.
