Kiran Bedi for resolution on 50 per cent seats in pvt colleges

Cabinet should have passed a law on the lines of Tamil Nadu under which 65 per cent seats in private colleges are reserved for local students.

Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi reiterated her request for a resolution in the territorial assembly for securing 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges here for MBBS courses.

With parents and teachers raising criticism against the territorial admission for not obtaining 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges, the Lt Governor also joined it probably initiating another tussle with the Narayasamy-led government.

“It (government) should have ensured at least 50 per cent seats for Puducherry students as per the government notification but they settled for 36.6 per cent for Puducherry medical students thereby causing a loss,” she said in a WhatsApp message.

Citing the legislation passed by Tamil Nadu government obtaining at least 50 per cent seats from private medical colleges under government quota, Ms Bedi said that if the government here had done so, it would have considerably covered the loss of seats as deemed universities are part of national merit pool now.

The Cabinet should have passed a law on the lines of Tamil Nadu under which 65 per cent seats in private colleges are reserved for local students, she said.

Responding to the letter written by Narayasamy to Union health minister requesting to postpone the first round of counselling for MBBS management quota admission, Ms Bedi said that more than postponement, medical students need seats in Puducherry private medical colleges.
