Tribal youth dies of monkey fever in Kozhikode

Six persons from the district are undergoing treatment for monkey fever at Medical College Hospital now.

Kozhikode: One person from Wayanad died due to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), popularly known as Monkey fever, at Medical College Hospital here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Sundaran, 27, a native of Begur tribal settlement near Kattikkulam.

He had been undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital for the last few days. This is the first monkey fever death in the district after 2015, according to health officials.

Six persons from the district are undergoing treatment for monkey fever at Medical College Hospital now. Admitted at district hospital in Mananthavadi on March 10 with fever, Sundaran was shifted to Medical College Hospital after his condition worsened on March 13. Sundaran’s death occurred at a time the health department is taking measures to ensure that the Kyasanur Forest Disease reported in the district does not spread among people who live in the forest.

Vaccines have been stocked and medicines for those who enter forest zones have been distributed, health officials said.

Ever since the disease was reported, the district administration had been on high alert and regular review meetings are on, according to health officials.
