Three areas identified for parking lots in Visakhapatnam

Not a single new traffic parking lot has been allocated in the city while the number of vehicles in the city has risen to 12 lakh.

Visakhapatnam: After years of delay, Vuda has begun internal discussions to build multi-level vehicle parking lots under public and private partnership (PPP) mode at three places — RK Beach area, Dwarakanagar and Siripuram — to address parking woes at major centres in the city. The proposed multi-level parking lots will accommodate hundreds of cars and bikes.

Though Vizag is poised to become a Smart City, the traffic police are worrying a lot about the growing traffic and lack of space for parking at many areas in the city.

Not a single new traffic parking lot has been allocated in the city while the number of vehicles in the city has risen to 12 lakh.

ACP (Traffic) K. Mahendra Patudu said, ‘The city requires dedicated automated multi-level parking lots at 4-5 places to mitigate parking woes. We have suggested Vuda and GVMC to construct automated multi-level parking lots at Beach Road, Daba Gardens, Dwarakanagar, Jagadamba Junction, Maddilapalem and Gajuwaka. However, the local bodies are yet to take any major step in this regard, he added.

While some big commercial complexes provided space for vehicular parking, smaller shopping complexes have not done that yet.

“I was forced to park my vehicle beside the road and pay hefty fines for parking the vehicle in no parking zone,” said P. Viswanath, a resident of Ramnagar in Vizag city.

Vuda has planned to set up multi-level vehicle parking lots in the city and if all goes as per plan, the first one will come up on the Beach Road as it is choked with parking of vehicles.

“We have also identified a place on the Beach Road for the automated multi-level parking lot and we are chalking out plans to speed up the project,” said vice-chairman of Vuda, P. Basanth Kumar.
