Hirakhand Express train mishap: Gatekeeper saw spark under loco

The loco pilot had said that he applied sudden brakes after hearing a loud sound.

Kuneru: There could be many versions for the Hirakhand train mishap, but the statement of eyewitnesses can help to pinpoint the exact reason. The gatekeeper at the Kuneru railway station, D. Apparao, gave conflicting versions.

“My job is to open and close the gate. I opened the gate when the Hirakhand Express was entering the station,” he said. He said he got scared seeing a spark under the locomotive. “Immediately, I informed the station master. But, before any instruction reached me I heard a big sound. It was nothing but the derailed coaches hitting one another,” he added in a trembling voice. He said he could not say what went wrong.
