The government needs to come up with a plan to conserve rain water and the people too should learn to save water. In 2014, the Karnataka High Court directed the state government to come up with a plan to tap rain water in Bengaluru. Spread over 800 sq. km, the city records 15 to 17 TMC of rain annually. But the government has not taken enough measures to conserve it.

If it arranges to tap rain water, the city's demand for water will drop drastically. Rain water harvesting should be strictly implemented to help it. Even in homes, measures can be taken to conserve water in various ways. For instance, if the ordinary taps in the kitchen are replaced with taps that can separate the single flow of water into many tiny streams, utensils can be washed with lesser water. Also, for every flush we spend six to10 litres of water. But if we can supply used water to flush toilets we can save quite a bit of it.

More commitment is needed from people, who should be encouraged to invest in technologies to save and reuse water. If an individual has money to build a house on a 30x40 plot, investing in technologies to save water should not be difficult for him. Scientific institutions too need to come up with affordable technologies to conserve water.

Apartments should take measures to be self- reliant in water. Also whenever new areas are developed, their topography should not be disturbed as this will affect the natural flow of water. In addition, we need to build more lakes for conserving rain water and revive the existing ones.
