Hyderabad: Slip roads are being constructed at 221 junctions to reduce the waiting time for commuters wishing to take a left turn.
For example at Telugu Talli Flyover, those heading from Secretariat towards Tank Bund have a free left (slip road). The GHMC and traffic team on June 22 identified such crossroads and at most junctions there is government land available to be acquired. Meanwhile with the junction closure (Secunderabad to Habsiguda, Panjagutta) the average speed in Hyderabad has increased to 15 km from 10 km, with this few more junctions to be closed.
South district deputy commissioner of Police – Traffic, A.V. Ranganath explained, “The city has 221 signal junctions. Though there are free lefts, technically it is not beneficial as the straight or right moving traffic blocks the way. For example at Jubilee checkpost those coming from Filmnagar heading to Madhapur are forced to wait because traffic moving to Yousufguda and Banjara Hills blocks them.”
As part of Intelligent Transport System, a slip road must be laid for free lefts. “After a survey by GHMC and traffic it was found that most of the land that needs to be acquired is government property. So the slip roads at these junctions will be made first. Those falling in private lands, the GHMC will negotiate,” added the officer. The Traffic Department now identifying crossroads to be closed, as this has cut the waiting time.
