Bengaluru: Bengaluru Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which monitors air pollution in the city at five monitoring stations - City Railway Station, Kadubeesanahalli, BTM Layout, Peenya and Basaveshwaranagar, said air quality was ‘moderate’ on Saturday.
As of 4 pm on Saturday, the Air Quality Index (a six-rung classification scale that rates quality of air from ‘severe’ to ‘good’) for Bengaluru was ‘moderate’, as per the data collated from the monitoring stations. The CPCB note indicated that if the air quality is moderate there will be breathing difficulty for people with respiratory disorders and heart disease.
As per the report the major pollutant in the city was PM2.5, a particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometres. It causes respiratory problems and reduces visibility. PM 2.5 particles are so small that they can only be detected with the help of an electron microscope.
As for air quality index, which ranges from 0 to 500, Bengaluru stood at 118 on Saturday.
