Hyderabad: Cabbies, police lock horns

Hyderabad: Prepaid taxi owners and drivers operating from RGI Airport are at loggerheads with the police. Cab owners are protesting the police proposal to cancel the slots of pre-paid taxis at the airport if the driver or the owner violates conditions set by the police.

They said proposal to remove the cab from the pre-paid service is a harsh one. Also, they said the pre-paid taxis should be allowed to take passengers outside the city.

“Traffic cops have also imposed restrictions like no passenger pick up during return journeys. Local traffic cops are throwing their weight despite the DCP traffic assuring us that all our pending issues will be settled at a meeting three days ago,” they said on condition of anonymity.

ACP C. Satish said some of the pre-paid cab owners have formed a cartel. “The government had issued a GO providing jobs for Shamshabad locals who gave their lands to the airport. This cartel is resisting the entry of locals and continuing their monopoly,” he said.
