Mandatory internships help NIE students get plum jobs

NIE officials added that the average salary offered has seen a 10% hike this year, at Rs 6.5 lakh per annum.

BENGALURU: Making internships mandatory has helped increase chances of employability of engineering graduates at the National Institute of Engineering (NIE) Mysuru, which saw as many as 42 global, national and domestic companies show interest in hiring students this placement season. Elaborating on the growth in placements this year, Harshith Divakar, Training and Placement officer at NIE told Deccan Chronicle that the Institute has already witnessed an improvement of 40% over last year till September 18, just a month into the ongoing placement season.

“NIE is likely to overtake the overall number of placements of the previous batch of 2017-18 in the first three months of recruitments itself. As much as 15% to 20% hike in salary offered by the companies is also a positive indication that our students have adapted to the major trends and transformations in the field of technology,” he claimed. According to the placement numbers released by the Institute on Tuesday, the highest cost to company (CTC) package offered during the season was Rs 25.18 lakh per annum.

Further, six internship offers were also converted to regular placement at the institute. NIE officials added that the average salary offered has seen a 10% hike this year, at Rs 6.5 lakh per annum. Expressing his delight NIE Mysuru Principal Dr G. Ravi said the numbers confirm his belief that there is no shortage of jobs for well-trained engineering graduates. “We will lay further emphasis on internships to make students employable. NIE is looking forward to a ‘strong-placement year’ this time,” he said.

The Institute has also been offering mandatory six-month internships to the students and giving them options to pick and learn industry-driven electives as part of the course. “Value hires are given prominence over volume hires and the shift from hiring graduate resource to more skilled resource is something that we have been observing recently,” Divakar noted.
