Hyderabad police to slap PD Act, teams hunt for qazi

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad city police is preparing proposals under the Preventive Detention Act for the detention of Qazi Ali Abdullah Rafai who is allegedly involved in the facilitation of several contract marriages reported in the city.

Deputy commissioner of police, South Zone, V. Satyanarayana said the qazi was involved in the contract marriage of an Omani national which was being investigated by the police.

“We have searched his house, but he is currently absconding. Two teams are looking for him,” said the DCP.

The qazi faces cases at police stations in the Old City for his involvement in other contract marriage cases.

The TS Wakf Board had suspended him, but the qazi managed to obtain a stay order from the court, and he has been continuing his activities. The police secured the remand of all accused.

The police will hold a meeting with all the chief qazis of the state to seek their assistance in preventing the solemnisation of contract marriages.

Officials of the Minorities Welfare Department are also expected to participate in the meeting.
