Farmers to get unused land back: Karnataka Cabinet

Of the 1.21 lakh acres, the final notification was issued for 40,924 acres.

Bengaluru: In a landmark decision, the state cabinet on Wednesday decided to return to farmers big parcels of land acquired for industries but unutilized so far.

Law minister T.B. Jayachandra told the media under Suvarna Karnataka Corridor Land Bank scheme, the state government had notified 1.21 lakh acres in Raichur, Davanagere, Chitradurga and Tumakuru districts during 2008-09.

“Of the 1.21 lakh acres, the final notification was issued for 40,924 acres However, the industry development programme had not progressed for eight years after the final notification was issued.The land for which final notification was issued was vacant, and barren. Farmers who lost their land could not develop or reclaim due to legal impediments. So, the government decided to return 13788 acres to farmers,” he added.

The cabinet approved tapping of Neera (toddy tapping) under the new Neera Policy. "Farmers will benefit. So, the cabinet has given administrative approval to organisations of farmers which want to tap neera and sell. Only members of coconut growers federation will be allowed to tap Neera,” the added.

The cabinet also approved a proposal to rename women’s university, Vijayapura, after Akka Mahadevi and henceforth, the university would be called, Akka Mahadevi Women University.

The government decided to regularise the 77.2 acres of land encroached upon by Sri Chamundeshwari Buildtech Company at Shyanamangala, Billakempanahalli and Bananduru in Ramanagara district.
