Guest column: Flyover will decongest KIAL area, but worsen CBD'

The steel flyover proposed from Hebbal to Chalukya Circle should ideally extend to Silk Board and the express highway leading to Electronic City. This way commuters from areas in south Bengaluru like Jayanagar, J.P Nagar, HSR Layout, and Koramangala will also benefit along with those from the Central Business District (CBD). Otherwise the current 6.75 km steel bridge will only cater to commuters like politicians, businessmen, delegates, dignitaries, VIPs, government officials and so on from the CBD heading for the airport.

Although there will be entry and exit points from the bridge at Jayamahal, near Vidhan Soudha, Palace Road and Raj Bhavan, its signal- free traffic could cause traffic pile-ups. Technically, one could reach the CBD from the airport in about 20 to 30 minutes, but commuters could find themselves stuck in traffic for another 30 to 40 minutes inside the CBD to reach their destinations close by.

So, although this bridge will be a relief as it could decongest traffic in Hebbal, Mekhri Circle and Windsor Manor, it could be a bane at its exit points to the CBD area. The permanent solution lies in elevated corridors connecting not just two points like Hebbal and Chalukya Circle, but two extreme sections of the city in different directions.

For example, we could have two elevated corridors connecting east and west Bengaluru, one from KR Puram towards Yeshwantpura and the other from Whitefield towards Mysore Road with entry and exit points at prominent locations integrated with the north-south elevated corridor extending from Hebbal until Silk Board junction and connecting the existing elevated express highway towards Electronic City.
