Hyderabad: The state government report on two maternal deaths that occurred at Gandhi Hospital on February 19 and 20, as a result of excessive bleeding, claims that both were high-risk cases and negligence was not the cause.
But the hospital’s doctors allege negligence in the cases of both patients — Ramiza Jabeen from Karnataka, who died on February 19, and Laxmi who was admitted on Feb. 20 and died the same day.
A senior doctor said, “These were planned surgeries and not emergencies. There were just post-graduates attending to the patients. When there is excessive bleeding, a senior surgeon is required to help. Due to excessive bleeding, the uterus had to be removed. But a senior surgeon was not present.”
The team that worked on both the patients has not revealed details, and the case sheet has been prepared to read that these were high risk cases, it has been alleged. “Both patients could have been saved. They are terming it as complications during childbirth, which is wrong,” a senior doctor said.
Dr J.V. Reddy, Gandhi Hospital’s superintendent and head of gynaecology said: “No death from any unit has been reported to me. There are various gynaecology units and it has not been brought to my notice. There are senior assistant professors in various units and they are effectively handling the cases. If there is any death we will be able to check only on Wednesday.”
