Kochi: As part of Jala Raksha, the rescue operations of Kerala police, the Student Police Cadets (SPC) were deployed in various relief camps across the district on Monday.

According to police, they help function the camps by serving foods, clothes, guarding and managing the traffic.

“We are planning to provide their services for ten days. Currently, we have 1700 cadets deployed in 17 schools in the district to manage the camps and help support inmates who survived the flood. The cadets are well trained for providing help and giving accurate directions to the people,” said assistant commissioner T.R. Rajesh, who is in charge of the operation in the district.

Besides managing the camp, the student cadets also find time to entertain the children to help shed their strange feeling.

“They also help children to read books in the meantime providing help to developing habits of reading," he said.

"We have divided the cadets into 5 or 10 groups for each purpose. Some manage traffic near the camp, and another provides security at the entry gate. Some student cadets are inmates of the camp. They wake up in the morning and wear the cadet uniform to start the work assigned to them. Besides all this, they are doing their duty with complete joy.”

According to officers who are part of the operation Jala Raksha, they are planning to conduct a cleaning campaign to help the people who return homes after the water recedes, mostly at the end of this operation. From 8 a.m. to 5.30 pm, SPCs’ services are available to the flood victims.
