NIMS doctors rejoin man's chopped wrist

The hand was chopped off at the wrist while Mr Chaturvedi was at work at about 2.30 pm on July 6.

Hyderabad: Doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences fitted back the wrist of the right hand of Osmania University Press worker M. Chaturvedi, after quick thinking by his colleagues saved the severed part.

The hand was chopped off at the wrist while Mr Chaturvedi was at work at about 2.30 pm on July 6. He was rushed to the hospital within an hour.

“The palm got cut off and co-workers put it in a polythene bag and placed it in an ice box. This is very important as an amputated part must not be directly put on the ice,” said Dr Koteshwar Rao, associate professor and plastic surgeon at NIMS, who attended the case.

Mr Chaturvedi underwent an eight-hour surgery during which the palm was re-attached to his arm by NIMS doctors.

The team of Dr R. Srikanth, head of the department of plastic surgery at NIMS, assisted in the surgery.
