Widening of old Hyderabad road long delayed

The road was between 20 and 30 feet wide and dotted by several religious structures.

Hyderabad: While the people complain about delay in implementation of Metro Rail project in Old City, there are other projects as well which began decades back and have not reached their logical end. One of the most important projects, the Charminar-Falaknuma road is still underway though the project was envisaged 30 years ago.

The then Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) started widening the four kilometer road aiming to connect the arterial road with the outskirts and extension areas.

The road was between 20 and 30 feet wide and dotted by several religious structures. Authorities began acquiring and demolition properties in phases. “But still there are some properties which are to be acquired and demolished to make the road width even. These are bottlenecks,” says Mohd Turab, a social activist from Old City.

Seven religious structures located at Aliabad, Shah Ali Banda, Shamsheergunj and Syed Ali Chabutra are located in the centre of the road.
